Different types of stones with their uses

Uses of different types of stones

Uses of different types of stones, stones, worker, construction
Stones are formed from rocks and property of stone depend on the property of stone.
Now according to geological classification of rock, their are mainly three types of rocks
  1. Igneous rocks
  2. Sedimentary rock
  3. Metamorphic rock

Use of stones formed from different types of rocks

Use of stones formed from igneous rocks

Examples of igneous rocks are-
  • Granite
  • Basalt
  • Trap etc.
Mainly igneous rocks are used for heavy construction works.

Use of stones formed from sedimentary rocks and metamorphic rocks.

Because, both the stones have many similar uses. Therefore we are telling the uses of both the stones combinely.
Examples of sedimentary rocks are-
  • Sandstone
  • Limestone
  • Gypsum etc
Examples of metamorphic rocks are -
  • Marble
  • Slate
  • Gneiss etc.
Sedimentary and metamorphic rocks are mainly used for carving and architectural purposes.

Uses of different types of stones

Here we have written ten different uses of stones in construction field with stone used for that particular work and appropriate reason that why that particular stones are used for that work.
Our format is simple firstly we will write use of stone then we will write stone used for that work with reason.

1. Use - For building work i.e. for making walls, foundation and other structural components.

  • Stone used - Sand stone
  • Reason/Why? - This stone is hard, durable and easy to craft.

2. Use - For carving, giving ornamental and architectural appearance.

  • Stone used - Marble and close grained sandstone.
  • Reason/Why? - These stones have good appearance, durability, hardness and are easy to craft.

3. Use - For arches of buildings, bridges and other structures.

  • Stone used - Light Sandstone
  • Reason/Why? - This stone is hard, durable, light weight, and easy to craft.

4. Use - For railway ballast, concrete aggregates, in road mix etc.

  • Stone used - Basalt, granite, trap and laterite.
  • Reason/Why? - These stones are hard, tough and can resist all forces causing wear and tear in stones.

5. Use - For large construction projects like constructing dams, large bridges, naval docks, harbors and other massive construction projects.

  • Stone used - Gneiss and granite.
  • Reason/Why? - These stones are hard, tough, strong and can resist thrust of waves and high natural or artificial forces.

6. Use - For buildings in industrial towns.

  • Stone used - Granite and close grained sandstone.
  • Reason/Why? - These stones have the property to resist the worse effects of acids and fumes present in industrial atmosphere.

7. Use - As a fire proof stone.

  • Stone used - Sand stone.
  • Reason/Why? - This stone have the property to resist high temperatures. This property is because minerals present in this stone have equal co-efficient of expansion.

8. For manufacturing of lime.

  • Stone used - Lime stone.
  • Reason/Why? - As the name of this stone is considered, one can easily understand this stone is used for making lime. This stone decompose into quicklime on heating.

9. Manufacturing of iron.

  • Stone used - Lime stone.
  • Reason/Why? - Quick lime formed from limestone acts as flux in the furnace which reduces the melting point of iron ore.

10. For insulation.

  • Stone used - Slabs of slate and marbles.
  • Reason/Why? - The particles of these stones are closely packed thus they are non-absorbent and these stones are bad conductors of electricity.
